The HP Omen 15 is a mid-range gaming laptop that puts a lot
of energy into the price. However, unlike most gaming laptops under $ 1,250,
it's hard to see where HP makes such a cheap, portable powerhouse. For your
money, the HP Omen 15 is one of the best gaming notebooks you can buy.
Excellent performance, a solid display and a long list of great features make
this notebook a complete package for HD games. With an Nvidia RTX 1060 graphics
card and an Intel Core i7-8750H processor of the 8th generation, this laptop
can keep up with devices that cost half a percent more. Relax in a beautiful
Full HD display with a refresh rate of 144 Hz, and the HP Omen 15 looks like
one of the best gaming laptops on the market.
The HP Omen 15 is class-perfect and not ashamed when it comes
to the gaming pedigree. Add a customizable backlit Chroma keyboard. This
eye-catching notebook looks just as noble and feels as high-quality as anything
else, which costs much more. There are also several other configurations with
the option of a GTX 1070 graphics card. However, the model we tested here has
the best balance between price and performance.
HP Omen 15 – Design:
There is a fine line between cheesy and taste-neutral
laptops. Some have more light and decor than a Christmas tree at Hamleys, while
other devices have so much flair that it's difficult to distinguish them from a
budget student laptop. The HP Omen 15 gets the balance. The black chassis and
the brushed metal lid make the Omen 15 both edgy and of high quality, while the
red logo and emblem is just enough to impress without overstraining.
The HP Omen 15 is also one of the few gaming notebooks that
have an ultra-flat bezel. This adds massively to the overall look and makes
sure it stays up to date with modern standards. Honestly, I put the styling of
the HP Omen 15 with the Razer Blade 15 to one of the best-looking gaming
laptops I've ever had my eyes on. On the back shoulders of the laptop you will
find some powerful fan outlets. These help to reduce the risk of overheating,
but add a bit of chunk to the laptop in return. With 2.52 kg, the HP Omen 15 is
hardly light, but it is still thinner than most other gaming notebooks that
have the same price. I never had a problem stowing it in a bag, though its
weight definitely struck as I transported it through London to the office. I
expected nothing less, considering that this thing packs a GTX 1060 GPU.
You'll also find the speakers on the bottom of the laptop
where I always find a strange place, unless you like some muted audio. That is,
it can beat the sound of shots and car engines with a considerable volume. The
latter is located on the back of the laptop, along with the HDMI and display
ports that allow the action to be switched to an outdoor monitor. The
positioning of these ports does not seem to matter at first glance, but it is
of great benefit that no cables are pulled from the sides to the laptop. This
also means that many wires are not visible, so your desk does not look like spaghetti
cross.
HP Omen 15 – Keyboard:
The keys on the Omen 15 feel soft and provide a satisfying
click when pressed. This is not loud enough to bother your colleagues at work,
but there is enough feedback and travel to let you know when a key was pressed.
The anti-ghosting technology also allows you to simultaneously press the
buttons, so you do not have to worry about one of your taps remaining
undetected in the middle of a busy shooting range.
If the design has not already concluded that the Omen 15 is optimized
for gaming, the highlighted WASD keys should do the trick. You also have the
option to activate the chroma lighting. Press the Omen Command Center button in
the upper right corner and you will open a menu where you can play with the
keyboard power levels and lighting. Here you can turn on the backlight, with
the colors lit by the transparent letters on the keyboard.
HP Omen 15 - Display:
One of the most common areas where quality is compromised to
reduce the cost of gaming laptops is the display. Both the Dell G3 and the Dell
G5 were guilty of it, thinking that you're probably connecting an external
monitor anyway. However, the HP Omen 15 has somehow managed to maintain an
affordable price without fumbling the display. Wildland's explosions were a pleasure
to see as bright colors appeared on the Full HD screen. Visual elements do not
seem to be particularly strong when you look at the screen from a certain
angle.
An 90.8% sRGB color space means that the HP Omen 15 offers
fantastic color accuracy that is important to digital designers and artists.
The results of Adobe RGB and DCI P3 are not as good at 63.9% and 66.6%,
respectively, but this laptop is not intended for photographers or anyone
working in physical media. So that's not a problem. Games look great, and you
have to know that first and foremost.
HP Omen 15 -
Performance:
Before I even started a game, I realized that the HP Omen 15
was fast. Flipping through web browsing tasks was incredibly fast and never had
a tantrum when I opened dozens of tabs. This speed is everything thanks to the
Intel Core i7-8750H processor. Packing an i7 CPU into a gaming notebook at a
great price is impressive. The HP Omen 15 compares to laptops that cost more.
