We all know that the tech giant Samsung has no limits on the
smartphone sector. Recently, the brand introduced the Samsung Galaxy A9 (first
impressions), the world's first smartphone with four cameras on the back. I
managed to get my hands on a unit, and in this review we can see if it meets
the hype.
Design and Display:
If you have read our review of the Samsung Galaxy A7
(review), you know what to expect from the Samsung Galaxy A9, at least in terms
of design. Both devices use glass on both sides, held together by a metal
frame, a notch-free display and are somewhat boxier compared to the company's
S-Series offerings.
The only difference between the two models is that you get an
extra camera sensor and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on the back of the
A9, That and the presence of a gradient that makes the Samsung Galaxy A9 a
pop-up. I was sent the device's blue color for review, and although the back of
the handset recalls devices from brands like Huawei and OnePlus, I do not
complain. The Galaxy A9 looks beautiful and there are many spectators who
inspect the device when it's in your hands - it's a magnet of the people.
Although the Samsung Galaxy A9 is slippery, the curvy back of
the smartphone and the excellent weight distribution of the frame have a
positive effect on the grip. So much, I did not feel the need to hit a case on
my review unit. Unlike the Galaxy A8, the Galaxy A9 is unfortunately not
delivered with the IP68 certification. Therefore, you have to think twice about
whether or not you are the type with whom your smartphone goes to the bathroom.
Samsung makes some of the best displays in the business and the Galaxy A9 is no
different. The smartphone comes with a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED panel with FHD +
resolution, which has bold hues and excellent contrast ratio. The Galaxy A9 is
a great smartphone that lets you watch movies and shows in no time.
Performance, software
and Battery:
In a predictable way from Samsung, the company's Galaxy A9 is
powered by silicon, which is typically found in devices that cost significantly
less. The handset is supported by the Snapdragon 660 chip from Qualcomm, which
works alongside 6GB or 8GB of RAM. My review sample shipped with 6GB of memory
coupled with 128GB of built-in, user-expandable memory. Understandably,
compared to the OnePlus 6T, the Samsung Galaxy A9 will not be able to keep up
with pure computing power, but it does the job.
The software runs the brand's Experience UI v9.0 in addition
to Android Oreo on the smartphone. To see how the company's flagship ships
still receive the Android Pie update, you may need to wait a while for the
update to be transferred to the A-Series devices. Fortunately, the phone runs
Google's latest security patch. Over the years, the company has managed to
reduce the software bundled bloatware. In contrast, you will find many useful
features for the skin, such as: For example, switching navigation buttons,
gesture support, and floating windows let you open different apps in small,
customizable windows.
In the battery department, the Samsung Galaxy A9 comes with a
3,800 mAh cell, which can easily blow at the end of a day under heavy use.
During my time with the smartphone, I managed to switch from 11:00 to 22:00
with a single charge. I had to play PUBG for an hour, watch several videos on
YouTube, and use WhatsApp and Instagram all the time.
Cameras:
Are we talking to the elephant in the room, right? The
Samsung Galaxy A9 is truly the world's first smartphone with four rear-facing
cameras. The handset is top-down with an 8-megapixel (1: 2.4) lens, a
120-degree wide-angle lens, a 10-megapixel 2.4-telephoto lens, a 24-megapixel
camera (1: 1 , 7) and a 5 megapixel camera (5 megapixels) equipped / 2.2 depth
sensor. On the paper, the Galaxy A9 hopes to replace your camera bag with lenses,
but in practice, the pictures I took with my smartphone leave something to be
desired.
