When
Sony sold its VAIO PC business last year, new investors did not look back. The
strange idea of the resumed VAIO brand started with the VAIO Z Canvas with no
other "tablet" attempts in the hardware package. Now the company has
released a modified 2-in-1 laptop.
At
first glance, if you cannot see the seam at the back of the screen, you might
think that VAIO Z Flip is a standard flip. To switch to tablet mode, swipe the
switch at the bottom of the screen and flip the screen along the center seam
until the magnet locks into place. Two of the other two can always flip the
entire screen, but the keyboard on the back feels that many consumers can make
a turning point.
VAIO
Z Flip is definitely not the first to use this design. When VAIO was still in
Sony, I made a 15-inch version of Z Flip using Intel's Haswell CPU. The new
VAIO Z Flip is modern with a 13-inch screen for the first time. This is an
interesting place. Most 13-inch Ultrabooks or 2-in-1 devices typically use a
low-power 15-watt CPU. For example, Microsoft's Surface Book includes a 15-watt
Skylake chip.
High power chip:
With
Z Flip, the VAIO was designed around a 28-watt Skylake chip to add more
functionality. According to the VAIO, Z Flip outperforms the Apple MacBook Pro
13, but boasts the same weight as the MacBook Air 13. Two Apple notebooks -
VAIO still targets older Broadwell CPUs. MacBook Air uses 15 watts of CPU and
MacBook Pro uses 28 watts of chips and designed a manual passive boost mode to
drive the chip at higher temperatures when needed to amplify the Z-Flip. The
built-in M.2 NVMe SSD has no compromise on storage. For memory, laptops can
purchase up to 16 GB of RAM.
The new Z engine:
I
asked about the battery life of the VAIO Z Canvas 45 watt quad core Haswell
CPU, but I think the company can get 11.5 hours with the new "Z engine".
This is a VAIO unique way that the motherboard can be miniaturized with a
Z-flip allowing larger batteries. VAIO says this can be done simply because the
machines used to make the motherboard are often used to make more dense
motherboards for smartphones. Z Flip made in Japan using this machine can make
small boards. Outside, the VAIO gives you a good impression. The top cover is
made of aluminum and the bottom is carbon fiber. VAIO uses a Dorido coating to
prevent greasy stains.
The
VAIO integrates a touch screen with 1,024 pressure sensing capabilities and a
self-active stylus. Pen is standard, but it is best to think that VAIO Z Flip
is very affordable. Core devices with Core i5, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD starts
at $ 1,799. Typical two-to-one technology like HP's Specter X360 starts at $
899. For companies that do not want the extra cost of tablet mode, the company
also offers flip versions. It lost the flip touch screen and pen, but kept the
28-watt chip for higher performance. It starts with $ 1,499 and provides 8GB of
RAM and 256GB of SSD. In tablet mode, VAIO Z Flip does not press the button
forcibly.
