Not long ago, Apple took up the challenge of Microsoft's 12.3-inch Surface Pro
with its own 12.9-inch iPad Pro. So Microsoft has responded to Apple with its
own 10-inch tablet just a matter of time with Surface Go.
Surface Go seems to be adapted to support the latest 9.7-inch
iPad with Apple Pencil for consumers and education. It features the new
Alcantara fabric type cover and support for the surface stylus, not to mention
the almost identical power configuration. So since Apple and Microsoft both have tablets (and games)
designed to learn and improve productivity, which one should you buy? To answer
this question, let's have a look against each other.
Design:
Curiously, the iPad and Surface Go are designed to be pretty
much the same as their ancestors. The Microsoft tablet simply uses the Surface
formula and reduces it to get more curved edges than the Surface Pro. At the
same time, the iPad largely retains the design of the previous model.
Windows tablets retain their branded media, which is a boon
for creative who often use styli. The Apple iPad does not have this feature,
although you can use the Smart Cover to get a similar (remote) feel.
Both tablets are very thin, but the iPad's 0.29 inch (7.5 mm)
thickness slightly exceeds Surface Go in the 0.33 inch (8.3 mm) range.
Likewise, the iPad is a bit lighter than the Surface Go, weighs £ 1.03 (469
grams) and weighs 1.15 pounds (522 grams). Of course, these differences in the
tablet or purse in your hand are hard to discern.
This makes the design of Microsoft more addictive and
modular, and the core of the iPad is self-sufficient, so there is no need to
improve through the connection. Another key difference is that Surface Go can run the full version of
Windows 10, the desktop and laptop operating systems from Microsoft (you
need to update Windows 10 S, go out of the box), although iPad works with the
iPhone. The same iOS is used, but there are some improvements like pen support.
Display:
Although the Surface Go surpasses the iPad in versatility,
openness, and beauty, Apple is still the king of the display. In this respect,
the iPad is basically not challenged, but Microsoft clearly catching up
quickly.
The latest iPad features a 9.7-inch IPS touch screen with a
resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels or 264 pixels per inch (ppi) and an
anti-fingerprint oleophobic coating. It's like the rich and accurate display
you're used to, and now supports stylus pens.
However, Microsoft
Surface Go's 10-inch-1,800 x 1,200 (217 ppi) touch monitor is not as sharp.
Now, art experts can tell the difference between these two resolution points,
but normal users will not. In any case, the iPad Pro seems to be better than
the Surface Go because of its sharpness and leading color rendition.
Performance and price:
Microsoft's Surface Go is priced at $ 399 ($ 379, $ 599),
which is much more expensive than the $ 329 iPad (£ 319, $ 469). However, the
devil lies in the details.
The Surface Go uses the same Intel Pentium Gold processor
with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of eMMC storage, and can be upgraded to 8 GB of RAM
and 128 GB of SSD storage. At the same time, the 2GB RAM of the iPad cannot be
improved, and 32GB of storage directly reaches 128GB. On paper, the additional
memory and storage resources of the Surface
Go make it a serious advantage over the more limited iPad. However, you pay
more for this benefit, and when you buy the necessary accessories for a tablet,
the price is always higher than the cost of the iPad - these accessories are
sold separately.
Although we cannot judge too much the performance of both
devices in nature, we have not fully tested the Surface Go. We can look at the
packaging of each device and make some enlightened observations.
