The Sony Vaio Tap 11 is a slim Windows 8 tablet with a magnetic detachable keyboard
for direct docking with Microsoft Surface. According to Sony, it is the world's
thinnest Intel Windows 8 tablet, which the company believes is an all-in-one
device that gives up laptops.
The Sony
Vaio Tap 20 made us feel overwhelmed but liked the Sony Vaio Pro 13 Ultrabook.
Fortunately, the Vaio Tap 11 takes the best of both worlds and puts it in a
sleek, portable design.
Design:
With a
thickness of only 9.9 mm, the Vaio Tap 11 with keyboard is very slim. From a point of view,
it is slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 Android tablet. Just like the
Pro 13, when you pick it up, you can really appreciate the lightness of it. You
hardly notice that you carry this in your bag.
Sony has
already simulated the appearance of the Tap 11 on the Sony Xperia Z tablet, which is a good thing. There is a similarly sized black border around
the touch screen display with a connection port around the edge of the tablet.
Later, you
will find the brackets above the tablet and the magnetic latches that connect
the keyboard. If you charge your tablet and the keyboard physically
connected, it also charges the battery-powered keyboard. The keyboard of the
magnetic cover is very similar to the Microsoft Type keyboard. Without port,
the keys are slightly raised from the surface. The extremely thin design helps
keep the overall thickness of Tap 11 below 10mm.
The bottom
is lightweight aluminum and, after careful inspection, it looks like the edges
crack, much like the Vaio Pro 13 in our review. In our short game,
the magnetic connection between the keyboard and the tablet is not the safest
Screen:
The Sony
Vaio Tap 11 features an 11.6-inch 1080p Full HD display with Triluminos screen
technology from the Sony Bravia TV series. We saw this high-quality screen on
the Vaio Pro 13, which is one of the clearest screens we've seen on Ultrabooks.
Similarly, on the Vaio Tap, 11 colors are rich, the resolution is high and the
brightness level makes it ideal for HD content.
Functionality:
Sony pushes the Vaio laptop to attract creative types. Its solution
is to introduce a pen-style digital pen. The stylus has 256 levels of pressure
sensitivity to help you feel the pen on paper.
Compared to the Samsung S-Pen, which is installed in the
Samsung Galaxy Note 3, it has certain advantages in terms of pressure
measurement and offers excellent precision. It works for simple drawing, but
let's sees how it relates to the accuracy of S-Pen.
There are a
number of native applications that make the most of the pen. VAIO paper is
essentially a place where you can combine graffiti and images in one place.
With Vaio Clip you can crop and send images to the Vaio Paper App. Adobe
Photoshop offers full support for the Sony pen as it approaches the release
date.
For the
camera, the Vaio Tap 11 is equipped with an 8 megapixel camera on the back with Sony's Exmor R CMOS
sensor. This is very useful in the Cam Scanner app; you can use the camera to
scan images. The native application can then recognize the edges and reduce the
noise in the image, making it available for other applications.
In terms of
connectivity there are support for micro HDMI and micro SD. There are also
built-in Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G versions of the
option, which is currently not available through Microsoft Surface.
