Sony has introduced an on-demand cloud-based
real-time production service that captures and plays real-time sports, music
and corporate events without the need for expensive OB infrastructure.
Sony said
the local service was designed to reduce the cost of on-site production. To
date, high-quality and reliable on-site production requires rigorous
infrastructure, substantial upfront investment and a large number of creative
and technical personnel.
Sony's virtual production solution was
unveiled last weekend at the Red Bull Alpenbrev motorcycle race in Sarnen. With
cloud-based virtual production services, 4G connectivity, six camcorders, and a
laptop, Red Bull is transforming its social media platform. The remote location
of the Swiss hill climb and limited event production budget mean that using the
physical OB production infrastructure is challenging and too expensive.
Using Sony's virtual production service,
camera crews with wireless transmitters at various locations along the route
passed the camera's output to a virtual production switch hosted in the cloud
via Amazon Web Services. The self-synchronized camera streams were visuals
mixed by an operator who was also on site, but could be anywhere in the world.
The operator used a laptop to make the
live cuts, add graphics, logos and creates the output, which could then be
streamed live on social networks, YouTube, Facebook Live, websites,
applications or CDN platforms.
Previously,
Red Bull had reported on activities by Alpenbrevet, including a multi-camera
film crew producing a 90-second background. Red Bull production manager Hubert
Zaech told the radio that the virtual production service enabled him to improve
his ambitions and broadcast the entire event online at a low additional cost.
In addition to real-time output, the entire content of each camera stream is
also recorded in the cloud for post-processing. This allows you to create live
and post production content with the same settings. Zaech added, "Although
the scenic route is a major attraction for our Alpenbrevet participants, it
poses a major challenge for our broadcast team, which wants to capture and
broadcast the event globally." Sony's
virtual production gives us the freedom to be flexible and Flexibility
Capture and distributes content without the logistical nightmare of installing
physical infrastructure in these remote areas. "]
Stuart
Almond, head of marketing and communications and media solutions at Sony, said, "In
the era of changing viewing habits, multi-screen and multi-platform viewing,
media organizations are looking for new technologies to enhance content value
and attract customers in new and exciting ways. Virtual Production is designed
to do exactly that. Sony's virtual production service will be available in
Europe in September 2018.
